Healing Trauma Through Yoga: Where Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Neuroscience

In an overstimulating world, yoga offers more than relief — it offers reconnection. For those navigating trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, or chronic stress, yoga can be a powerful tool for healing. Grounded in both ancient wisdom and modern neuroscience, trauma-informed yoga supports the nervous system, cultivates resilience, and helps rebuild a sense of safety in the body.

As a trauma-informed yoga facilitator, I offer accessible, evidence-based, and embodied practices that honor each person’s unique journey. Whether working individually or with organizations, my approach integrates movement, breathwork, meditation, and rest — supporting deep regulation and reconnection.

The Koshas: A Holistic Map for Healing

Yoga teaches that we are more than just our physical bodies. The Koshas — five layers of being — offer a framework for understanding how trauma impacts us and how healing unfolds:

  • Body (Annamaya): Movement and somatic practices to restore safety and presence

  • Breath/Energy (Pranamaya): Breathwork to regulate and revitalize

  • Mind/Emotion (Manomaya): Mindfulness to re-pattern thoughts and emotions

  • Wisdom (Vijnanamaya): Contemplation to rebuild trust in inner knowing

  • Bliss (Anandamaya): Deep rest and reconnection to joy

The Science Behind the Practice

Thanks to decades of neuroscience research, we now understand how trauma affects the autonomic nervous system — particularly the vagus nerve, which governs heart rate, breath, digestion, and emotional regulation.

According to Polyvagal Theory, a well-regulated vagus nerve supports feelings of safety and connection. In contrast, trauma can lead to vagal shutdown — dissociation, freeze states, or emotional numbness.

Yoga directly influences vagal tone through:

  • Slow, diaphragmatic breathing

  • Gentle, mindful movement

  • Vocal practices such as  humming or Nada Yoga 

  • Yoga Nidra

Clinical studies have shown that trauma-informed yoga can:

  • Improve heart rate variability (a key marker of resilience)

  • Reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression

  • Decrease inflammatory markers and stress hormones

  • Restore interoceptive awareness (our ability to feel what’s happening inside the body.

Integrative Healing Through Trauma-Informed Yoga & Nervous System Education

My work weaves together trauma-informed yoga, neuroscience education, and embodied practices grounded in the wisdom of the Koshas — the multi-layered map of the self in yoga philosophy.

Rooted in Polyvagal approach, recognizes how trauma impacts the autonomic nervous system. Developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the theory explains how the vagus nerve governs our responses to safety and threat — from social connection (ventral) to freeze and shutdown (dorsal). When this system is dysregulated by trauma, it can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, disconnection, or emotional overwhelm.

Trauma-informed yoga offers accessible tools to support nervous system regulation, including:

  • Breathwork and diaphragmatic breathing

  • Gentle, mindful movement

  • Sound practices like humming or mantra

  • Stillness, presence, and interoceptive awareness.

Trauma-Informed Yoga In Practice 

In my trauma-informed yoga approach, In each session I may use :

  • Grounded movement to build safety in the Annamaya Kosha.

  • Breath practices to stabilize the Pranamaya Kosha.

  • Mindfulness and emotional attunement to support the Manomaya Kosha.

  • Self-inquiry and guided meditations to cultivate wisdom in the Vijnanamaya Kosha.

  • Deep rest and Yoga Nidra, Nada Yoga to reconnect with joy and stillness in the Anandamaya Kosha.

This layered, body-based work creates space for healing that talk therapy alone sometimes cannot reach. All practices are optional and offered in a collaborative, choice-led environment—empowering you to move at your own pace and find what feels right.​​​​​​​
