Ashwini Shannikodi. PhD

Trauma-Informed Mind-Body Facilitator
Yoga, Pranayama & Yoga Nidra Practitioner
PhD in Social Work

I support individuals experiencing anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or disconnection to regulate their nervous system, reduce stress, and strengthen emotional resilience. Using a trauma-informed, mind-body approach rooted in yogic practices, pranayama, guided relaxation, and somatic awareness, I help clients develop practical tools to manage stress, release tension, and respond to life’s challenges with clarity and stability.

My Story

Yoga has been more than a practice — it’s been a lifeline.

I first turned to yoga seeking grounding, but over time, it became a path of deep healing — helping me reconnect with myself after years of emotional disconnection and chronic stress.

A Personal Journey Through Caregiving, Grief, and Reconnection

Growing up with a sibling who had special needs, I stepped into caregiving roles early — physically, emotionally, and quietly. While I gave with love, I often received little support in return. Over time, I internalised the belief that my needs didn’t matter, shaping how I navigated life.

Moving to the UK after marriage brought grief, cultural adjustment, and distance from everything familiar. My yoga practice had fallen away, and I began to experience anxiety, burnout, depression, and chronic pain. At the time, I didn’t realise these were my body’s way of expressing what my mind could not yet face: unprocessed trauma, emotional suppression, and the effects of prolonged survival mode. Some of us carry an “old soul” maturity, sensing life’s weight earlier than others — this was part of my journey.

In many South Asian communities, mental health remains a taboo. We are often not taught to rest, reflect, or reach out. I resisted for years — until my body made it clear I could no longer ignore what was inside. That was my turning point.

Healing from the Inside Out

Yoga became that turning point — not just the postures, but the deeper practices of movement, breath or prana , meditation, sound vibration, and stillness. Through consistent practice, I began to reconnect with my body, emotions, and inner landscape. I recognised long-standing behavioural patterns (samskaras) and slowly replaced survival with presence, pain with compassion, and overwhelm with understanding.

What I learned — and now teach — is this:

  • We don’t need to be fixed

  • We need to be seen.

  • We need to be supported, heard, and held in spaces of safety, care, and compassion — where healing unfolds gently, on our terms.

A Trauma-Informed, Somatic Approach

My personal healing journey involved:

  • Reconnecting with my nervous system

  • Developing somatic awareness

  • Building the capacity to sit with discomfort rather than push it away

Informed by Polyvagal theory, approach, I came to understand how trauma lives in the body — and how healing begins when we prioritise safety, co-regulation, and embodied presence. These insights shaped both my recovery and the trauma-informed framework I now offer to others.  My process mirrors the three core stages of trauma recovery used in clinical models:

  1. Stabilisation — Establishing safety, grounding, and nervous system regulation

  2. Processing — Gently exploring stored emotions and trauma held in the body

  3. Integration — Reconnecting with meaning, agency, and a sense of wholeness

This isn’t just theory — it’s lived experience. Healing doesn’t happen all at once. It unfolds slowly, with gentleness and support. Along the way, I’ve learned to honour my full story — the grief, the resilience, and everything in between.

My Work Today

As a trauma-informed yoga teacher and facilitator, I support individuals navigating:

  • Trauma, grief, and emotional overwhelm

  • Burnout and chronic stress

  • Anxiety and nervous system dysregulation

  • Chronic pain and mind-body disconnection

My sessions offer:

  • A safe, inclusive space grounded in lived experience and clinical understanding

  • A blend of movement (asana), breathwork (pranayama), meditation, sound, and storytelling

  • A compassionate approach that meets each person exactly where they are — with cultural sensitivity and trauma awareness

  • A focus on nervous system regulation, somatic awareness, and long-term resilience.

Whether you feel disconnected, emotionally exhausted, or are seeking a deeper relationship with yourself, my work offers a pathway to restore, rebalance, and reconnect.

For Therapists & Mental Health Practitioners

I welcome collaboration with therapists and mental health professionals who wish to integrate trauma-informed, somatic yoga as a complementary support for their clients. My approach is grounded in both personal insight and clinical frameworks — offering a body-based, culturally aware, and co-regulatory space to support healing alongside psychotherapy.

Let’s work together to support your clients holistically.
